When quality can't afford to slip
For premium markets, one bad batch can undo years of trust.
Wilhelm Weyers
A German potato and onion wholesaler based in Weeze, was the first in the potato world to grade on internal quality, not just what shows on the skin. Their Elisam machine uses light transmission technology to look straight through each potato, catching internal defects that used to mean cutting one open to find. In a bad season, hand-sorting would have needed eight to ten people on the line. Reliable workers are only getting harder to find, and the machine now does that job on its own.
When the labor just isn't there

Pioneer Potatoes
A sixth-generation family farm in Washington's Skagit Valley, handling around 10,000 tons a year, cut its workforce by 50% with Elisam grading, now running its entire line with just 12 people. Processing speed climbed from 12 to 15 tons per hour, with 2 more lanes still in reserve to ramp up to at least 22 tons per hour when needed. A leading grower-shipper based in Idaho Falls, Idaho. They first switched to an Elisam optical grader, then upgraded to Ellips True-AI.
